You don't get a lot of background into society at the time, but it's not necessary. The novel centres around 4 characters, three of which live together (Dr. Sloper, Catherine Sloper and Dr. Sloper's sister). <br /><br />It wasn't full of humour and because of the lack of characters, it's not 'gossipy' per-se [from a 'societal' perspective], but the sister is gossipy. It's a seemlingly simplistic story with more depth than what appears on the surface.
