Though there are Heeps and Murdstones in the world, there are also Peggottys and Aunt Betseys and Micawbers who help us navigate through the low times. I think I first read this book when I was about twelve and then a half dozen times since and I always finish with a sigh of satisfaction. I don't know when in my Year of Dickens I will get to it but I think I will save it for a time when I need a boost!Kristen M.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02335598194501733541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-32459847183110889542012-02-24T21:29:23.274-05:002012-02-24T21:29:23.274-05:00Little Dorrit is Wonderful! I think this is one that I will get more and more from each time I re-read it too. I like what you said about the book really being about the people around him who shape his life. I think that's true and it was Dickens way of acknowledging that in his own life.Melissa (Avid Reader)https://www.blogger.com/profile/02119628715475021774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-11874101158815925722012-02-23T11:21:29.284-05:002012-02-23T11:21:29.284-05:00Oh, Aunt Besty! I think, in being near-autobiographical in nature, Dickens is reflecting upon his life and on the people in his own world who shaped him. He's paying homage to those who have helped him, cared for him, encouraged him, etc. - and he is also recognizing the "benefit" of those negative influences in his life, without whom he may not have become who he did nor the writer he was.

This is one of my favorite Dickens novels, too. So many of the supporting characters made such an impression on me, and I think it's the reason David Copperfield is one of my favourite novels (and certainly my favourite Dickens).Dianahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02957349442523993974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-86517226830083405502012-02-22T19:39:57.769-05:002012-02-22T19:39:57.769-05:00Such a beautiful post. Every character means something, every circumstance has some effect on David and the people around him. It's a story about second chances, family, friendship and love. It's about being the very best person one can be and accepting responsibility for who you become, all the while appreciating the lessons others have taught you along the way. It's just a beautiful story altogether.
I'm really enjoying Great Expectations. I'd like to know what you think of it if you give it another try :)Carohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12456284399025708010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-39143860798653120992012-02-22T16:41:14.874-05:002012-02-22T16:41:14.874-05:00I am really glad you have liked David Copperfield ...I am really glad you have liked David Copperfield so much (and thanks to your passionate review it is now on top of my Dickens reading pile!)and I can only strongly recommend you to give Great Expectations another try. I think one has to have a certain maturity to appreciate the meaning of this book, that's why teaching it in High School is probably not a good idea, but in my opinion you are totally ready to enjoy it now!
Concerning your very interesting observation of people shaping everyone's life I had to think of something Estella says:

“I must be taken as I have been made. The success is not mine, the failure is not mine, but the two together make me.”

You see, the impact other people have on our lives is a very big theme in Great Expctations too.Cassandrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06672158633910811092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-28152355400853480282012-02-22T16:39:31.578-05:002012-02-22T16:39:31.578-05:00A new favorite is ALWAYS a good thing! Don't you just want to hug Aunt Betsy when she confronts the Murdstones? I like Dickens...some books more, some less. Little Dorrit is his next on my reading list...probably this summer.Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01140033967048452572noreply@blogger.com
