Also, thanks for sharing that Wharton and James were friends. That's the sort of inside information I love to know. I like imaging how one might have influenced the other. :)*ೃ༄ Jillianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14139487177036647728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-49714095716248764662012-01-05T07:41:17.898-05:002012-01-05T07:41:17.898-05:00Interesting that Wharton and James were friends......Interesting that Wharton and James were friends....as i started this novel, I couldn't stop thinking about Newland Archer, Wharton's protagonist in The Age of Innocence.

I was not as enthralled with this novel (mainly for the last half) but I can relate to these reflections of the first half. I really liked Isabel Archer and hoped she'd hold on to her independence.Rebecca Reidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06062252252301802298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-74145746720867281692012-01-04T16:07:10.567-05:002012-01-04T16:07:10.567-05:00I have The Ambassadors on my shelf to be read this...I have The Ambassadors on my shelf to be read this year - the only other James I've read is Turn of the Screw during college. Can't wait to read more from him, this one sounds particularly good!Brookehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13474997114568231162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-46091622213773310902012-01-04T14:51:05.679-05:002012-01-04T14:51:05.679-05:00I admit, Henry James scares me. But you make this book sound so good! Makes me want to try him again.Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07026099426503180472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-49016090676689749842012-01-04T10:26:46.208-05:002012-01-04T10:26:46.208-05:00I *just* read a book about the history of marriage...I *just* read a book about the history of marriage (primarily in the West, esp US/UK), and you might be interested to learn that actually the 19th century saw a loosened approach to women being used/forced into marriages! That being said, before the laws of primogeniture, they could have much more impressive dowries and took them with them if the marriage ended.

Anyway, it was quite interesting! Marriage: a History by Stephanie Coontz if you want to track it down. I think it will help inform my classics reading. :)Evahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06703372903532502944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-2621701367219524642012-01-04T10:15:42.684-05:002012-01-04T10:15:42.684-05:00Sigh, I have to add this book to my never ending T...Sigh, I have to add this book to my never ending TBR list. It sounds too good not to. It might as well end up being my first James.Carohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12456284399025708010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-91411386888019204172012-01-04T09:40:35.444-05:002012-01-04T09:40:35.444-05:00I must read this book again. What I do remember, is that I loved James' "stories" but was terribly put off by his looong sentences. I'm hoping that with age has come patience for those sentences! I look forward to trying James again.Terri B.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12215878121282668358noreply@blogger.com
