In the original Orestes is killed by the furies I believe (in fact there is a grim undertone of this in the Odyssey as everyone keeps tlling Telemachus to go and avenge hi father the way Orestes did, even though Orestes is now dead, since he is a hero, etc). The Libation Bearers, instead, presents a 'superior' form of justice - the Athenian Senate (no coincidence that it was written by an Athenian...), who listen and decide on the fate of the man. I've wondered if this was supposed to be a real alternate vision, or if its more like if I wrote a play today about, say, Jesus Christ being judged by the Supreme Court instead of the Sanhedrin.Keshalyihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00900218197083383905noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-16833489779418800562011-09-20T08:37:08.765-04:002011-09-20T08:37:08.765-04:00I liked these plays in high school and even wrote ...I liked these plays in high school and even wrote a term paper on them. I think a neat someday project would be to read a lot of Greek literature in quick succession to get a better broad overview of everything. I like how characters overlap and plots tie up with one another.Erinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11429588794754369453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-51884681930173644282011-09-19T14:57:18.606-04:002011-09-19T14:57:18.606-04:00I really need to read more Greek mythology and tac...I really need to read more Greek mythology and tackle this! I really do like it when I read it, even if it does sound a bit intimidating from your thoughts here...Rebecca Reidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06062252252301802298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543330341390707771.post-47846019268838223842011-09-19T08:34:50.856-04:002011-09-19T08:34:50.856-04:00This sounds really interesting! This sounds really interesting!Jillianhttp://jillianreadsbooks2.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.com
