Title: A Journey to the Center of the Earth
Author: Jules Verne (1828-1905)

First Published: 1864
My Edition: Signet Classic (seen at left. This is a super boring cover)
Pages: 300

Other Works Include: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days, The Mysterious Island, From the Earth to the Moon, Paris in the Twentieth Century, In Search of the Castaways, The Green Ray

I really enjoyed Verne with my read of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea this past summer, so I am looking forward to this next encounter. I always had this image of Verne being a stuffy old guy, but after reading one of his novels, I know that isn't true.

I have to really admire Verne and what he accomplished in his lifetime. I mean, this book was published in 1864...did they think he was crazy based on all this science-fiction? I might have, if I lived back then. I was blown away by how modern Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was, so I hope that the same feeling comes through in his older title.

This is the last Verne title on my original 250 list, but I tacked a few more onto my Classics Club list for the future. :) I know I am going to want more by him!

If you want to see my post on Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, you can find my post by clicking here.

How do you all feel about Verne? Has anyone seen the film adaptations of his novels (I seem to remember hearing they were horrid, which breaks my heart!)

  1. It's been ages since I've read Verne, but I included a title on my Classics Club list. I've enjoyed what I've read of his (this one & Around the World in 80 Days). Haven't seen the movies, as they've mostly looked unappealing to me.

  2. I really enjoy Verne. If you're expecting technical sci-fi then you're barking up the wrong tree... but if you're okay with technical-sounding, then you'll really enjoy it. I'm sure children would enjoy it for the adventure - and I don't remember it being that gruesome [unlike some H.G. Wells].

I've read A Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Around the World in 80 Days and have the reviews up on my blog.

  3. I haven't actually read him yet (oh, the shame!). Recently, however, I've purchased lovely copies of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. My sister has told me wonderful things about him, so I need to get on it!

  4. I read this recently because as a child I loved the old movie, I used to watch it over and over again :-) I didn't enjoy the book as much, I felt like it ended too suddenly, almost as if Verne got a bit bored half way through and ended it as qickly as posisble. It will be interesting to see what you think

  5. I read Around the World in 80 Days and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea out loud to my son when he was about 10 years old. We both enjoyed them. My brother was a big fan of the movie Mysterious Island based on Verne, but I think its hokeyness was its main attraction. Verne is pretty far ahead of his time with his anticipation of modern technologies. Worth reading.

  6. I've liked the Verne novels I've read in the past. I haven't read this one yet but my book club has it scheduled soon. I like Verne and find his novels to be "light" classics. Not to intense or deep but lots of fun and well pulled together. And Im' not a fan of sci fi in general!
