A Victorian Celebration: Far From the Madding Crowd Giveaway!

I have been blown away by the response to this event. And while my own reading of the Victorians has been a little on the slow side (I only have one more week of school, then I'll be a Victorian reading maniac), you guys have been cranking out the most wonderful posts! I'm still catching up on reading all of the great things you guys have been saying.

One of the reasons I love events like this so much is the amount of community it brings together. I have discovered so many new bloggers over the last week or two! I love finding new-to-me blogs and discovering others who share the same passions.

Okay, enough of my sappy nature, on to the giveaway!

The second book I am offering up is Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. This is a title I'm hoping to get to during the event. I've loved both Hardy books I've read so far (Jude the Obscure and The Mayor of Casterbridge), so I have high hopes for this one. Here is a synopsis from Goodreads.com...

"Far From the Madding Crowd tells the story of beautiful Bathsheba Everdene, a fiercely independent woman who inherits a farm and decides to run it herself. She rejects a marriage proposal from Gabriel Oak, a loyal man who takes a job on her farm after losing his own in an unfortunate accident. He is forced to watch as Bathsheba mischievously flirts with her neighbor, Mr. Boldwood, unleashing a passionate obsession deep within the reserved man. But both suitors are soon eclipsed by the arrival of the dashing soldier, Frank Troy, who falls in love with Bathsheba even though he’s still smitten with another woman. His reckless presence at the farm drives Boldwood mad with jealousy, and sets off a dramatic chain of events that leads to both murder and marriage."

  1. I read and loved Tess of the D'urbervilles, but I've not read any other Hardy. I'd like to read this one. My favorite summertime activity is to avoid the heat as much as possible...how could those Victorians survived in those layers of clothes without air conditioning (but of course we know they did). For the past few years we've been escaping the heat for a week in Canada at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Highly recommended. Donna at dkioppolo[at]gmail[dot]com

    1. I hate the heat too, which is funny, considering I work outside all summer. I just hate being hot!

I haven't made it to Stratford yet, but I really want to go at some point!

  2. I've also read very little Hardy. Let's see, it's very hot in summer here, so I take the kids to the creek or swimming pool a lot. And I like to use the summer to sew more than usual too, and take a road trip to me hometown to see my best friend. jean at roadq dot com

    1. I usually get more crafting done in the summer as well. I crochet, and somehow making scarves and blankets in the summer makes sense? ;)

  3. Ah, living in Europe is really annoying!
Hardy is so hard to get in Austria, not a single bookshop seems to have an English version of his books.
Alas, I'll be patient and continue reading the titles from my shelves.

    1. I'm not a permanent teacher yet, so I don't have that luxury, but I know once I start having kids that will be a major bonus!

  5. Thanks for another giveaway! I love going on vacation with my family - usually twice to the mountains and once on a bit of a road trip to either a major Eastern city or wherever a particular historical society is meeting. This year, though, it's just a weekend in the mountains and a road trip to Oklahoma for my first year of college.

  6. My favorite thing to do in the summer is find a shady spot to sit and enjoy a cold beverage - a tall glass of iced tea, or maybe something with a little kick, depending on my mood ;-)

    No giveaway for me, thanks!

  8. Thank you for this opportunity.
I have 2 favorite summer time opportunities
    1. Gardening. Especially harvesting from my small vegetable garden. I love sitting in the swing near my garden, but the mosquitoes are pretty bad, so that is only done with repellent.
    2. Keeping my grandkids while they are out of school for the summer. I take them to the library, museum, zoo, movie theater.

    1. I wish we had a garden! We live in an apartment, so no gardening for us. But my mom always grew vegetables when we were growing up. Yum. :)

  9. Other than reading, I love having friends over on summer nights to cookout in our backyard and have some good drinks. Although I'm not a fan of the heat at all, I do love sitting on our porch at night with the Huz and watching the dog chase lightning bugs.

I haven't read this one yet, but I'm reading Return of the Native right now. So good!
